The Descent
I’d like to have considered myself as a bit of a gamer in the past. I know a lot of my old school stuff, I played excessive fighting games and still remember moves, hell I even used to MUD back in the day. I’ve started to notice I’m getting pretty fucking bored with games at the moment. Apart from the occassional surprise or older game that’s grabbed my attention, all I can see is more of the same over and over again.
Adding into the ridiculous amounts of hype associated with the industry at the moment, I find myself purchasing PSN games over going out to buy this months new greatest FPS game. It’s not just the masses playing FPS games, MMORPGs, fighting games and action games are all following the same path. They say imitation is a form of flattery, but with all games trying to better other ones at their own style, where is the innovation? For example, FPS’ barely add anything new to any game, MMO’s all have to have WoW-style qualities, fighting games are all 3D and add in pointless features instead of focusing on gameplay. Action games have changed since God of War and sporting games improve on how well sweat glistens on bodies(in a completely heterosexual way) instead of worring about the gameplay they are destroying.
Looking at the release list at the moment there’s the one “shining light” in Little Big Planet. The game isn’t anything like the rest of the junk out there, but between game politics and every site raving about it, I’ll be damned if I’m not pretty sick of it before it gets here. So I sit here playing Puzzle Quest wondering where it all went wrong. Did I lose interest because I’m bored of games in general, or am I sick of the same old story? Either way, I think it’s time to hang up the gamer beanie and ROM my way into a casual gaming stupor.
